Household Spending
Household spending data is vital for both policy and commercial decision making. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics publish inflation figures every month based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), this is a basket of goods and services whose prices are tracked over time.
The data below is taken from the CPI Users Guide and shows the % spend of urban households on classes, subclasses or individual commodities or services and is based on data from the KHIBS 2015-2016 survey.
Whilst this data does not show the absolute amounts spent on goods or services in an area, the % of household expenditure that each item, or class of item, accounts for is highly informative when identifying vulnerable areas and households. For example zones where the % of household expenditure on cereals and grains are over 10% are likely to be hit much harder by price rises in these areas than where the % spend is much lower.
